There's plenty to do in the Birthright campaign setting, and I was overjoyed to find the website that had plenty of versions for download (all fan created). I have the option of running a straight forward D&D dungeon bash, or a political intrigue game, or a murder mystery, or all three together.
There were lots of different kingdoms to choose from and plenty of scope with characters, backgrounds and adventures. The intrigue, the political wrangling, the looming wars. Fortunately all are integrated in a way that respects the setting. All of the 5e classes are represented, even though they didn’t necessarily exist in 1983, and 5e additions to the D&D multiverse like the Shadowfell and the Feywild make an appearance. The other two thirds of the book would need to be to be an adventure with a couple of dungeon/adventure sites.It's easy to see why it was I missed out on this I'd already fallen out of love with AD&D 2nd Edition long before this campaign setting was published so I let it pass me by, but I know if I had sat and read this when it first came out I would have dusted off my multiple polyhedrons from my Basic D&D boxset and set about running a campaign. So, maybe a 5e Birthright hardback release would have to devote a third of the content to the setting background, rules, etc. With the way things are now, the most a campaign setting could expect would be one hardback release. I definitely think the Awnsheighleign (the Gorgon, the Spider, Rhuobe, etc.) should be retained.Ī 5e Birthright release could not be your mother or father's Birthright and its plethora of releases to be certain.
Apart from having a bloodline score, I don't see where bloodline abilities have a place anymore. That might have been the original intention of the southern continent. I think the map ought to be changed enough to allow for exploration and development of unsettled areas on the main continent.
